Tastings de la Muerte: Glentauchers

Glentauchers Distillery (Anne Burgess / geograph.org.uk)

The precept is easy: one single distillery, a great deal of variations, chosen totally at random, over a number of days, not essentially in a row, till we throw within the towel or transfer on to one thing else.
Truly, I ought to elucidate the scenario: chances are you’ll already know that we make some extent of commonly tasting malts from all Scottish distilleries, although after all the variety of expressions of every we obtain varies wildly. Because of this for the extra ‘considerable’ distilleries—particularly from the indies—like Glentauchers on this case, the shares are likely to pile up a lot quicker than our tasting tempo can sustain with. Which is why, once in a while, we’ve got to do a little bit of a ‘clear-out’ with a few of them. However alas, we’ll by no means handle to style every thing, very sadly…

Glentauchers 15 yo 2008/2023 (46%, Gordon & MacPhail, Distillery Label)

Glentauchers 15 yo 2008/2023 (46%, Gordon & MacPhail, Distillery Label) Four stars

G&M actually have carried out a fantastic deal to boost the notoriety of Glentauchers, they should be awarded a medal for his or her efforts! Color: pale gold. Nostril: it’s mild, on backyard apples and pears, groundnut oil, a bit of white nougat and a few baker’s yeast. This will not be of extraordinary complexity, however sure, it’s genuinely charming. Mouth: it’s good, truly slightly wealthy ultimately, with a contact of sherry, some orange, nonetheless these apples and pears, and a wee word of liquorice. End: pretty lengthy, pretty delicate, malty, very fruity, apples and oranges, with cinnamon and pink pepper. Feedback: bang in its lane, very, very nice, flawless, actually.

SGP:641 – 85 factors.

Glentauchers 7 yo 2014/2021 (51.7%, SingleMalt.pl, PX sherry octave, cask #142)

Glentauchers 7 yo 2014/2021 (51.7%, SingleMalt.pl, PX sherry octave, cask #142) Four stars

Color: gold. Nostril: oily to the nostril, additionally chalky, yeasty and mineral. Beautiful notes of turrón, PX (however after all). With water: a bit of malt extract, onion jam, fig protect, a contact of Nescafé. Mouth (neat): large PX, in a cappuccino and toasted hazelnut type, which works very, very nicely. With water: slight meaty hints, orange marmalade, cracked pepper, sultanas, younger rancio. End: lengthy, spices rolling in, tamed by the dried fruit. Feedback: cracking little creature from Poland. We’re only a bit late to the celebration, but once more.

SGP:641 – 86 factors.

Glentauchers 16 yo 2008/2024 (46%, Royal Mile Whiskies, sherry butt, cask #900255, 885 bottles)

Glentauchers 16 yo 2008/2024 (46%, Royal Mile Whiskies, sherry butt, cask #900255, 885 bottles) Four stars

Even decreased to 46%, almost 900 bottles from a single butt, that’s not dangerous in any respect. Color: gold. Nostril: a wee marvel of pecan pie drizzled with honey sauce, alongside a glass of Sauternes and some Turkish delights. Mouth: identical story, we’re very, very near the G&M type, tarte Tatin, crema catalana, peanut butter and baked apples. End: lengthy, on orange zest and a sauce of caramel and honey. Feedback: this feels very ‘Elgin’, it’s actually superb, nothing to complain about.

SGP:641 – 86 factors.

Since we’ve come this far…

Glentauchers 23 yo 2000/2023 (55.8%, Gordon & MacPhail, Connoisseurs Choice for Kensington Wine Market, 1st fill sherry hogshead, cask #16602001, 329 bottles)

Glentauchers 23 yo 2000/2023 (55.8%, Gordon & MacPhail, Connoisseurs Alternative for Kensington Wine Market, 1st fill sherry hogshead, cask #16602001, 329 bottles) Three stars and a half

Color: amber. Nostril: beautiful sherry, with a bit of gunpowder to start, then baggage of black nougat, very dry currants, a contact of crème de menthe, correct previous oloroso, and hand-sliced pata negra—by no means machine-cut, heavens no! With water: whoof, gasoline, truffle, charcoal… Mouth (neat): that modelling clay high quality returns alongside the gunpowder, clearly a contact of sulphur, then fig marmalade of the interstellar variety. The presence of this type of sulphur can set off debates of galactic proportions, as we all know. With water: water solely boosts the sulphuric aspect. It’s like with some mineral waters, some love the sulphur, others detest it. End: lengthy and much more sulphury. The worst half is, it’s all terribly coherent. Leather-based and bitter almonds within the aftertaste. Feedback: very onerous to attain, it truly is a sulphur story.

SGP:362 – 83 factors.

Glentauchers 33 yo 1993/2024 (51.9%, OB for The Whisky Exchange, Lost in Time, refill American oak barrels, cask #5218, 108 bottles)

Glentauchers 33 yo 1993/2024 (51.9%, OB for The Whisky Change, Misplaced in Time, refill American oak barrels, cask #5218, 108 bottles) Five stars

Chivas and TWE on the helm right here. Color: pale gold. Nostril: we’re in advanced territory right here, poetic even, bordering on nostalgic—previous meads, honeys, farmhouse ciders… It’s really very, very stunning, delicate, virtually Proustian (is it not?). With water: oh sure, almond milk, honeys, valuable inexperienced teas, tanning oil, blond tobacco… Mouth (neat): it’s paying homage to the 1972s. However why does 1993 so usually echo 1972, throughout all Speyside distilleries? Honeys and waxes, bruised apples, tiny floral and natural notes, hay, borage, pansies… With water: an surprising arrival of faint maritime touches. End: not very lengthy however outrageously elegant, with a woodiness extra discreet than a cat stalking a mouse. Feedback: an ode to time. And 33 years—the age of you-know-who!

SGP:551 – 91 factors.

Glentauchers-Glenlivet 14 yo 2009/2023 (50%, Cadenhead, Authentic Collection, bourbon hogshead, 264 bottles)

Glentauchers-Glenlivet 14 yo 2009/2023 (50%, Cadenhead, Genuine Assortment, bourbon hogshead, 264 bottles) Three stars

Color: pale white wine. Nostril: it’s immaculate, the cask was in all probability as idle as a very militant French railway employee, however there’s a stunning lemon nougat drizzled with honey and scattered with bits of toasted pistachio, atop the same old apple and pear combo. With water: beautiful—let’s overlook about French railway employees, they’re a bit too demoralising. Mouth (neat): it’s superb, contemporary, near barley, inexperienced apples, lemon, meringue and stewed rhubarb… With water: not a lot want for it on the palate, it will get a bit too grassy, almost lawn-like. Finest skip the water. End: medium size, taut, herbaceous certainly. Feedback: higher to shelter these infants from water, although that will not be the orthodox method.

SGP:451 – 82 factors.

One final one for at present…

Glentauchers 11 yo 2011/2023 (51.5%, Club Qing, Kraken Go with the Flow, fino hogshead, cask #800436, 179 bottles)

Glentauchers 11 yo 2011/2023 (51.5%, Membership Qing, Kraken Go along with the Move, fino hogshead, cask #800436, 179 bottles) Three stars and a half

Now then, Hong Kong. Color: deep gold. Nostril: barely metallic, with tobacco, medlars, frozen sorbs, bread dough, just a few ashes and inexperienced walnuts… The fino have to be the perpetrator behind all this. It’s forgiven without delay. With water: a touch of compost, paraffin oil, a little bit of papier-mâché… Uncommon however charming. Mouth (neat): quirky combo—leather-based, resinous oil, pepper, bitter chocolate, walnut liqueur, nocino, pumpkin seed oil… With water: identical once more. Slight touches of damp cardboard. End: medium size, slightly earthy, actually beautiful however the fino leaves an uncommon footprint. Feedback: nice finos are legendary beasts, however their affect on our whiskies could be, pure hypothesis after all, a bit uncontrollable. We noticed the identical with some Ardbegs, twenty years in the past.

SGP:461 – 84 factors.

By the way in which, a great deal of Ardbeg arising quickly on WF, as we must be doing our common distant Feis Ile periods, however within the meantime, there’s nonetheless loads of Glentauchers to come back, so keep tuned.
