This is without doubt one of the new distilleries that has managed to determine its personal fashion and character, though instances appear to be more durable, as they’re for a lot of others. For our distinguished readers who is probably not conscious, the Isle of Raasay lies simply to the east of Skye. As we speak, we’ll be exploring the newest launch for the exceptional Maclean Basis. However to start with, a lighter model when it comes to alcohol… however not when it comes to story!

Isle of Raasay 3 yo 2001/2024 (50.7%, OB, Quercus Humboldtii Virgin Colombian Oak)
Frankly, this Colombian oak lark actually makes one chuckle, what an thought! Do notice that is full maturation, not some afterthought ending, however then once more, this child is simply three years of age. Let’s not get into carbon footprints, we could… Color: gold. Nostril: it’s mad how our mind works, figuring out the oak hails from Colombia, I’m getting espresso and cola, but additionally an abundance of candied fruits and some beautiful whiffs of fir smoke. For now, it’s a really fairly nostril. With water: extra cola but, every thing else boosted as properly. Very jolly. Mouth (neat): that is good, it’s creamy, it’s somewhat wealthy, it’s trendy, veering between coastal smoke, candied orange peels and a splash of pine bud liqueur. One might virtually imagine it got here from some American craft distillery. With water: actually splendid, with extra turmeric stepping ahead, certainly somewhat main the cost. Additionally some heather honey. End: lengthy, on strictly similar flavours, which is nice information. Beautiful notes of pink and white pepper. Feedback: I discover this actually glorious, and I doubt one might do a lot better at three years of age. ‘Colombian oak’, I have to be dreaming…

Isle of Raasay 5 yo 2019/2025 (61.1%, The Maclean Basis, charity bottling, launch 3, cask #557, 246 bottles)
The proceeds from this child, launched in parallel with Charlie Maclean’s three sons rowing throughout the Pacific (9,000 miles, no much less!), are earmarked to fund clear water entry in Madagascar, a most worthy trigger certainly. Color: deep gold. Nostril: beautiful tangerines, turmeric as soon as extra, all mild and rounded, with papaya and guava, a whiff of contemporary panettone from Panettone & Panettone, and a faint hint of Italian bitter. All in all, this one feels somewhat Italian, this Raasay, however at Château WF, that’s at all times excellent news. With water: tiny spices and hints of damp earth, like strolling by a hothouse full of unique flora. Mouth (neat): I feared it would flounder after the Colombian variant, however not a little bit of it, that is gloriously oily, brimming with honey and citrus fruits sprinkled with posh peppers. With water: glorious, extra of every thing, fantastically fruity with all method of citrus and barely earthy spices. End: lengthy, candied, with flavours clearly aligned with Italy. The best of amaros! Feedback: I hereby certify, on document, that my rating has not been boosted just because it’s a charity bottling backed by the Macleans. Swear on the holy barley, cross my coronary heart and hope to die, this one stands proudly by itself. – Serge.
