WF’s Little Duos, at this time Glenkinchie OB vs IB ex-sherry
|
We haven’t typically had the prospect to get pleasure from Glenkinchie, besides sometimes as a ‘secret Lowland’ over the previous two or three years.

Glenkinchie ‘Distillers Version’ (43%, OB, +/-2022)
A relatively current non-vintage launch, but nonetheless completed in American oak casks ‘seasoned’ with amontillado. We do love an excellent amontillado, after all.
Color: gold. The amontillado has barely marked the color right here.
Nostril: it feels as if the wine is much less dominant than in a number of the classic batches, as if the ending has been shorter this time. It’s pretty, all on barley and withered apple, relatively pure, additionally exhibiting contemporary brioche, then white chocolate with bits of fruit, a classy little factor seen right here and there. There’s muesli too, the entire exhibiting a pleasant brightness.
Mouth: rather more expressive on the palate, with caramel, vanilla fudge, a faintly earthy and smoky side in all probability coming from the sherry, then these walnuts we had been anticipating. Actually, it’s relatively pleasurable.
End: medium in size, a contact extra bitter, with notes of brown ale and salted butter caramel.
Feedback: actually nice, effectively put collectively and effectively balanced, although it’s misplaced a little bit of the ‘lightness’ present in basic Glenkinchie.

Glenkinchie 16 yo 2008/2025 (51.9%, The Whisky Company, sherry hogshead, 300 bottles)
Very intrigued by this bottle, and happy they didn’t label it as a ‘Secret Lowland’.
Color: deep gold.
Nostril: the sherry and oak are doing a lot of the heavy lifting right here, there are pretty varnishes, contemporary fir wooden and roasted nuts, fairly a little bit of nutmeg and ginger, and a stunning bourbon-like character we hadn’t anticipated. Touches of baked aubergine. With water: it folds again a little bit onto conifer wooden however stays most pleasurable.
Mouth (neat): ah certainly, I’m loving this, it’s highly effective, full-bodied, not very ‘Glenkinchie’ fact be advised however we’ll get used to it. Pretty caraway, cinnamon rolls, wormwood, juniper, honey, maple syrup, gray pepper. I actually do like this so much. With water: what’s extra, it swims superbly, solely turning into a tad candy, although I can’t fairly place the supply.
End: lengthy, nonetheless a little bit ‘bourbon’ for a sherry cask but it surely’s American oak in any case, with some coconut notes. Nonetheless that pretty varnish within the aftertaste.
Feedback: stunning and, to my palate, excellently trendy.
