WF’s Little Duos, right now Isle of Jura

OB vs. IB

(Go to Scotland)

Feis Ile on Islay is developing quickly, and Jura is a part of it!

Jura 'Islander's Expression No.3 Cabernet Sauvignon cask' (40%, OB, 2024)

Jura ‘Islander’s Expression No.3 Cabernet Sauvignon cask’ (40%, OB, 2024) Two stars and a half

Ex-bourbon with a ‘ending’ in purple wine? Actually, what’s it with them and purple wine today? It is getting a tad embarrassing. After all, purple wine casks have lengthy existed in Scotland, however they had been normally humble transport casks, not posh ‘château’ wooden, and had been sometimes vatted or watered down with the remainder. Color: gold. Excellent news, it isn’t salmon pink. Nostril: alright, this has been dealt with with a level of tact. The raspberries and blackcurrants are decently buried beneath toffee sauce, barley syrup and a spoonful of orange marmalade. In fact, there’s extra Cabernet Sauvignon on the label than within the dram. Ahem. A number of salty coastal whiffs. Mouth: the wine’s extra obvious now, taking us down the cherry clafoutis route, with some drained oak notes that jar somewhat, although to be honest, it isn’t disagreeable. Roasted apricot with a whisper of salt. End: not fairly as brief because the modest ABV would possibly counsel, and the salinity does pull it again collectively considerably. Feedback: all in all, not dangerous in any respect.

SGP:631- 79 factors.

The Scots do appear to be frequently enhancing their wine cask finishes — one may think they’re gearing as much as turn into winemakers, as soon as international warming has additional intensified its influence on the mainland and its islands. Critically, I nonetheless clearly most popular No.1 (Barbados rum – naturally) and No.2 (ale cask). I believe that with exceptions, there might have to be a relationship between the whisky and the cask’s earlier contents, both the uncooked materials (like ale), or it was a spirit (reminiscent of rum), or it was a fortified wine actually matured – not simply made and stored for a short while – in oak (like sherry, and so on.). Only a wild idea! Let’s transfer on…

Isle of Jura 2009/2024 (50.1%, Caora, No.13, refill barrel, cask #90103514)

Isle of Jura 2009/2024 (50.1%, Caora, No.13, refill barrel, cask #90103514) Four stars and a half

A most soothing label amidst the present avalanche of AI-generated oddities. Thanks, Caora. Color: straw. Nostril: basic Jura on show right here, with pure oils—sunflower, sesame, peanuts—alongside hints of engine oil, modelling clay and the gentlest of sea breezes. With water: the naked minimal of vanilla, the remainder stays unchanged and we’re not complaining. Mouth (neat): excellent certainly, correctly coastal with a saline profile, notes of inexperienced banana and a flicker of yellow curry. With water: comparable, with a reasonably discernible contact of peat displaying by way of. A delicate, quite fashionable mustardy edge emerges within the background. End: medium size, recent and coastal, with faint soot and ashes. Feedback: glorious Jura—and hats off once more for the restful label.

SGP:552 – 88 factors.
